Thus Voltaire sums up the philosophy of the German Leibniz, who believes in the divine optimization of the world. It is this philosophical conception which Voltaire wishes to dismantle, even to turn into derision. Pangloss thus incarnates Leibniz, while Voltaire places himself in the skin of Candide, initially a philosophical disciple then a dissident, as evil falls upon him. Pangloss thus teaches Candide, and whoever wants to hear it, that human beings live in “the best of possible worlds”, which in view of the disastrous events that are going to fall on the characters, seems laughable, and constitute A form of theoretical blindness. But in the philosophical system of optimism, human beings perceive evil as evil because they do not understand the power that governs the world and do not understand that evil exists for a greater good, Do not perceive it.
Through this criticism, Voltaire is a worthy representative of the Enlightenment, seeking to rationalize all human processes, to reverse superstition and irrationality.
